How to determine if wood is finished or needs to be sealed

We’ve had some questions on how to determine when a wood panel is sealed or unfinished. It can be difficult to tell with natural finish because after the clear coat should look just like the wood panel it was coated in, no different. You can determine using two methods:

1. The panel is glossy or reflective – this means it’s definitely coated and you cannot stain over it with a penetrating stain.

2. The panel does not absorb wood – this means it’s definitely coated and you cannot stain over it with a penetrating stain. To demonstrate we made a nice video for you.
